Half of Show of Hands and nominated musician of year 2009 for Folk on 2. Phil Beer(born 1953 in Exminster,Devon) is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and one half of the premier English acoustic roots duo Show of Hands. He has also been in The Albion Band, The Arizona Smoke Review, Downs and Beer plus many other guises.
Phil first began to play fiddle, guitar and mandolin whilst still at school in Teignmouth. This passion for acoustic music was especially stirred by the Davey Graham album “Folk blues and beyond”. He worked with Paul Downs as a duo and also in The Arizona Smoke Review. He joined The Albion Band in 1984 and stayed with them until 1991, touring extensively at home and abroad.
Show of Hands became a full-time partnership in 1991.
He did, however, do session work most notably on The Rolling Stones Steel Wheels album and on Grandson and Great-Grandson of Morris On. The Phil Beer Band toured extensively and in 2000 their live album was released to critical acclaim. Being available for only a short time Talking Elephant are pleased to be re-releasing this re-mastered version complete with two bonus tracks. The band consists of Gareth Turner(Little Johnny England), Deb Sandland(Aqua Sisters), Charlotte Ayrton(Eden Burning), Nick Quarmby(The Dockery Boys), and Steve Cricket(The Arizona Smoke Review).
